1962 Land Rover Series IIA 88 Station Wagon Rolling Restoration

This 1962 Land Rover Series 2A 88 Station Wagon was my first car. I bought it as a project the day before my 18th birthday back in 2004, after a months-long search. After doing the minimum amount of work it needed to be roadworthy, it became my daily driver and I continued working on a “rolling restoration.” As such, it was never off the road for too long, and technically wasn’t a full restoration. Work on this series Land Rover included (but was not limited to):

  • Replaced most of the body panels with panels that were in better condition (this truck was beat!)
  • Repainted the whole body in the original Poppy Red (the bulkhead was painted in place; all other panels were removed and painted individually)
  • Re-galvanized all of the galvanized parts and re-riveted them
  • Replaced all rubber parts
  • Rebuilt the original engine
  • Refurbished the transmission
  • Installed a Roverdrive (now called a Roamerdrive)
  • Upgraded to a lower-range suffix b transfer case
  • Upgraded to spin on oil filter
  • Sourced and installed all missing parts
  • Complete new interior: reupholstered spring seats and cant rails; rebuilt door panels, new headliner, etc.
  • Installed seat belts
  • Upgraded to 109 wheels
  • Rebuilt Warn hubs
  • Upgraded to Rochester carburetor
  • Installed new fuel tank
  • Replaced wiring harness
  • Replaced all lights, including rare, new old stock tail lights
  • Installed new leaf springs and shocks
  • Completely replaced exhaust system
  • Rebuilt swivel housings
  • Added sound deadening anywhere it could be hidden and installed complete Hardura trim

I sold this truck last year, and the new owner is really enjoying it. I do miss it a bit, but you can’t keep them all!
